Passage creates tight corridors between open clearings, forcing armies to funnel through narrow paths. This makes siege weapons and ranged units extremely valuable. Infantry and siege civs shine in the chokepoints, while cavalry civs need to find flanking routes. The narrow passages create ambush opportunities. Expect slow-paced games with decisive corridor battles.
