The Byzantines are the definitive all-rounder civilization, with discounts that scale with opponent unit strength and one of the most complete tech trees in the game. Camels, Skirmishers, and Spearmen cost less against specific counters, providing economic flexibility. Their unique Cataphract unit is a heavy cavalry unit immune to trample damage and bonus damage from anti-cavalry units. Greek Fire makes their Fire Ships significantly more powerful on water maps. Logistica gives Cataphracts an area-effect attack against infantry. Byzantines get free Town Watch and Town Patrol upgrades, improving economy efficiency. Theocracy makes Monks more efficient. Byzantines excel in team games where their versatility and cheaper counter units are invaluable.
